It’s becoming more common to see 6-foot-9 8th graders nowadays, but rarely do you see them playing at the 17U in AAU, much less for an elite team. Meet the Atlanta Celtics’ EJ Montgomery.
Residing in Florida, Montgomery joined up with the Celtics’ 17U team for the Adidas Uprising circuit and showed that he had no problem fitting in. The lefty held his own athletically (as seen by these dunks), but also showed off his skill level by hitting a number of jumpers extending to the collegiate three point line. By the time that things came to a wrap in Indianapolis, Montgomery had firmly supplanted himself in the Celtics rotation and was a key contributor in their success.
As far as the class of 2018 is concerned, Montgomery is right there with fellow 6’9 8th grader Marvin Bagley atop the rankings in what will be a fun debate to follow over the coming years.
